Resistance Ball-Handling Drills

Kicked off today’s workout with several different resistance ball-handling drills.

  1. Placing your hands on the ball-handlers shoulders, resist their movement as each player kept a 1-ball low dribble pound for the full length of the court, forward and backwards.
    • Right and Left Hand
  2. Placing your hands on the ball-handlers shoulders, resist their movement as each player kept a 2-ball low dribble pound for the full length of the court, forward and backwards.
  3. Placing a resistance band around each players waste, they perform a 1-ball inside-out crossover low dribble down and back, switching the high/low hands on the way back.
  4. Placing a resistance band around each players waste, they perform a 1-ball high 1-ball low dribble down and back, switching the high/low hands on the way back.
  5. Placing a resistance band around each players waste, they perform a 2-ball low dribble pound down and back, while the teammate pulls from the side to force them to fight the lateral pull.

4 Chair Shooting

This is a drill that I got from LA Clippers Assistant Coach Kevin Eastman many years ago and thing it works a ton of different skills for your players. While it is a  great shooting and conditioning drill, it forces your players to learn proper footwork while getting low and dropping their inside shoulder into the shot. We performed this drill with four different series.

Goal: Make 8 shots per series.

Series 1: Ran to the outside of the chair, pick up the ball jump shot.
Series 2: Ran to the inside of the chair, pick up the ball jump shot.
Series 3: Ran to the outside of the chair, pick up the ball and rip across for a 1-dribble pull up jumper.
Series 4: Ran to the inside of the chair, pick up the ball and rip across for a 1-dribble pull up jumper.

3 Man Pick & Roll Shooting

It is important to incorporate game shots that your players will see throughout your offense in your workouts. This pick & roll drill is one that gives the ball-handler two different looks reading the defense; attack help defense for a jumper and splitting help defense for a jumper. I then had two balls to feed one to the screener (popper) and one to the wing shooter drifting to the corner.

Celtic 50

This is yet another drill from Kevin Eastman that I got when he was still with the Boston Celtics; would imagine this drill is now called the Clippers 50. Each player must make 10 shots from all five spots on the floor in succession. Goal is to make the 50 shots in the least amount of shots. Today’s record was 50-64. It is a great drill because it gives your players an attainable goal that if they work hard will see improvement they can track with their shooting.

Goal: Make 50 in least amount of attempts.
